Ya know how you get when you want an answer and you can't wait? So you
start fiddling around with it and end up breaking it even worse? Well,
this time I got lucky. I went back to google and I must have tried the
magic keywords cuz I found the answer.

Turns out this is a known bug
 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/beta/show_bug.cgi?id=139485
And the bottom of this bug report has the answer - if you've got another
Linux install where there are working file associations, you can copy a
set of files to your FC3 box and life will be peachy.

The files (on the good box) in question are:

/usr/share/mimelnk/application/vnd.sun.xml.*

And you copy them to the same place (as root) on the FC3 box.
