Okay, I've run it again and I'll give you more info.

$ vi X.err
produces:
E325: ATTENTION

 NEWER than swap file!

        (1) Another program may be editing the same file.
If this is the case, be careful not to end up with two
different instances of the same file when making changes.
            Quit, or continue with caution.

        (2) An edit session for this file crashed.
If this is the case, use ":recover" or "vim -r main.c"
to recover the changes (see ":help recovery").
If you did this already, delete the swap file ".X.err.swp"
            to avoid this message.

Swap file ".X.err.swp" already exists!

I press open to open anyway...

That's all there is in that file - two default settings. Now lets try X.out:
Totally empty file!

I also checked "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" that's also empty. Next idea?

I'm getting a bit worn down by this now...

Thanks so far for the help guys, Duncan
