thanks for the quick responses :)

How do I check if gamin is enabled on my machine? 'ps aux|grep gamin'
returns nothing ...

It is just the desktop that doesn't refresh - any other directory in
nautilus is fine so I dunno why gamin would not work on just one
directory ...
