Can I recover a modprobe.conf from the running list of modules?

I don't know how well it will work, but you may remove (or rather move
to a backup location) the file /etc/sysconfig/hwconf, then run kudzu.
This way kudzu should re-detect your hardware and create appropriate
entries in modprobe.conf.
