dialin server issues

Greeting,

Please could some one assist me here I am really stuck.

I have setup a dialin server with mgetty and pppd.
I can make a terminal connection and login from the various accounts 
configured in /etc/passwd 

But this is only a terminal connection.

should there be a ppp0 or similar listing from ifconfig?

The pppd starts correctly and is running on the server when the connection is 
made

[root at preload mgetty+sendfax]# ps aux |grep pppd
root     22872  0.0  0.2  2120  920 ttyS0    S    14:45   0:00 /usr/sbin/pppd 
silent auth -chap +pap login
root     22884  0.0  0.1  3692  644 pts/1    S    14:46   0:00 grep pppd

The kppp terminal dailer shows this on login which is good:


preload.teq.pinteq login: ppp

there are no errors in the logs:

the problem is when I set kppp (on the client) to PAP it connects dies 
instanly and gives me this error

Feb 12 14:53:27 chadlap pppd[8639]: By default the remote system is required 
to authenticate itself
Feb 12 14:53:27 chadlap pppd[8639]: (because this system has a default route 
to the internet)
Feb 12 14:53:27 chadlap pppd[8639]: but I couldn't find any suitable secret 
(password) for it to use to do so.

What am I missing?

Is this saying that the server must also authenticate to the client or that 
the client is not authenticating to the server.
