Hi Charles,
I think I may have seen what you are describing, but you have given so
few details, I doubt you will get much help.  What kind of HP laptop
is this?  Is it by chance a zv5000 series laptop?  Does it have an
nVidia graphics card?  By "unreadable" do you mean completely
scrambled with blurred text flying across the screen (for lack of a
better description)?
I have a Compaq R3000 (the HP version is the zv5000) and had the same
problem with the nv driver.  Using the nvidia binary driver fixes the
issue.  If you just want to use the nv driver, I think using a
framebuffer will also fix the issue, but I haven't tried that.  Please
post more details about your hardware and setup, specifically video
chipset, driver used, and relevant xorg.conf stuff if you want a
better answer.
