What config file do I put that in?

I tried putting in /usr/lib/sasl2/Sendmail.conf:

$ more /usr/lib/sasl2/Sendmail.conf
#pwcheck_method:saslauthd
pwcheck_method:auxprop

I restarted saslauthd and sendmail.

I then tried to send mail authenticating as a user *not*  explicity added to
sasldb2 (see my email in reply to Alexander).  It failed:

Feb 14 07:19:06 ciscy sendmail[16848]: no secret in database
