ALSA Problems - Trident 4DWave DX

Yet another e-mail with an FC3 user experiencing issues with sound.  I
spent hours yesterday reading through about a year's worth of posts.
Unfortunately, none of them helped my cause.

Here's the breakdown:
FC3 running 2.6.10-1.760_FC3smp
Sound card: Trident 4DWave DX
System: Dell SC420 P4 2.8GHZ 512MB etc...
alsa* installed and updated

Kudzu recognized my sound card at first boot.  modprobe.conf was
configured accordingly.  When I run system-config-soundcard I see the
correct hardware detected.  However, I cannot play a test sound.  It
errors on the attempt.  I'm unable to run alsamixer because the device
isn't found.
