One thing I haven't seen mentioned here is that the dsl connection is
a PPPoE connection, aka Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet, and
you do not seem to be trying to use it, at least from the traces
below.
That said, I tried the Roaring Penguin version for about 2 days when I
first signed onto their dsl service coming up on 2 years ago now. It
was not then what I could call a stable connection, and I wound up
buying a router with PPPoE built in, a Linksys BEFSR41, set it up to
use PPPoE on the WAN port going to the modem (don't forget to set the
MTU to 1492 as PPPoE eats the first 8 bytes of a data packet as a
header). That router is now selling in the $50 to $60 USD range at
most places like Circuit City etc.
I set it to function as a gateway, pointed my firewalls gateway IP at
it (everything else here points at the firewall box for gateway), and
exactly one intrusion has been detected by the combination of
portsentry, tcpwrappers, and iptables in the ensueing 22 months. It
came from the same place as a previous attack came from, one of
verizon's dns servers, but the previous attack got further and
trashed the Seimans 2604 router I'd installed for about 2 weeks
before I swapped it for the much more expensive Linksys. Re the
Seimans, I guess you get what you pay for, so what did I expect from
a 29.95 USD router? Don't answer, because its obvious in retrospect.
Both worked, the linksys still does, its a hocky puck the script
kiddies don't seem to be able to get through. Oh, that knocking
sound? Thats me, knocking on wood so it keeps on running exactly
like that.
