It should "Just Work"    if you type gmplayer from the terminal.  if
not, maybe when you installed it, something got left in left field.  
do you use apt or synaptic?  these are package management tools that
take care of the dependency problems you were speaking of.  If you
would like, I would remove the mplayer you have installed,  install
apt and synaptic,  and install from those applications.
