desktop icons take 10 mins to appear after login

Afternoon everyone.

Something funny is up with nautilus on my FC3 box.

When I log in the desktop icons aren't rendered. ps -aux shows:


eliot     6044  0.9  1.0 34720 8040 ?        Ssl  12:49   0:00 nautilus
--no-default-window --sm-client-id default3


If I wait 5 or 10 minutes, they eventually show up and that process disappears
to be replaced with:


eliot     6190  0.6  2.5 44084 19664 ?       Ssl  12:53   0:01 nautilus
--sm-client-id 117f000001000110924937300000059310001 --screen 0


It's been like this for a few weeks now and I also noticed my iPod doesn't
automount anymore when I plug it in like it used to (over firewire). Don't know
if that's related. My machine is up to date.
