FC3 Xorg Savage Temporary Freeze

I upgraded my laptop (an HP Pavilion N5210) to FC3.
I had some trouble with the X set up during installation, so I went text
install, and proceeded. After a bit of a trial, it got there, and looked all
right.
X soon proved a bit of a problem. At first, I'd start it, and it'd work for a
minute, then freeze, and lock the machine.
I forced SWCursor on (this was needed in previous X installations on this
machine), and that didn't help the freezing. Then I tried "ShadowStatus on".
This stopped the lock up, but it still freezes for perhaps 10 seconds, and
then comes back.
I ran top over an ssh connection to my desktop. What happens is the X server
eats up 99.9% of the CPU for a few seconds, then suddenly backs off, and
things proceed.
Seems like a race to me.
The bug is reproducable by a number of things. One that seems to work
consistently is to start up2date-config, and flip through the tabs.
Scrolling quickly in firefox is another one, though it's a bit less consistent.
I have the most recent version of the xorg release on the machine
(xorg-x11-6.8.1-12.FC3.21 and friends).
Here's my xorg.conf:
