'Old' might be a bit strong for the ATI case. You can still buy new
and reasonably powerful ATI video cards that are supported by open
source drivers. So a more precise description of which cards you can
use is warranted.

You don't need to use binary drivers to use 3d on ATI 9200s and earlier.
There has also been some progress on reverse engineering some of
the later ATI video cards, but those changes aren't in the version of xorg
currently being used by FC3.
