Rhythmbox hang? while loading music library

I had your problem with older versions of Rhythmbox.
Try the current one - 0.8.8

Another neat player you could try is called Jmboree. It only works with  
ogg and mp3 (and only mp3 if you have the right gstreamer plugin - but  
that is true for Rhythmbox as well)
