mounting archos jukebox studio 10 in fedora core 3

Actually, fat gives you 8.3 filenames, vfat gives you long file names.
Any remotely current kernel with support for fat should autodetect
fat16/fat32.

Incidentally, a quick Google suggests the 10 means 10 GB. FAT 16 only
goes up to 4 GB [1].

Do you have a custom-compiled kernel? What does lsmod return? How about
cat /proc/filesystems ?

It sounds as though you didn't compile in support for DOS filesystems.
