Using 2.6 kernel still unusably slow

Okay. So, I built me a kernel. I used the default options supplied by
"make menuconfig" save for I selected a Pentium 4 processor. The "make
bzimage modules" part of which took me three hours. :( At least I
assume so. I went home and checked the timestamp on the last file it
mentioned when I came back this morning.
Hopefully I didn't miss anything:
I did a make modules_install, which created a /lib/modules/2.6.10
directory,
copied System.map to /boot/System.map-2.6.10,
ran mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.6.10.img 2.6.10,
copied arch/i386/boot/bzimage to /boot/bzimage-2.6.10
edited grub.conf to add the following entry:
title Self built 2.6.10
root (hd0,0)
kernel /bzimage-2.6.10 ro root=LABEL=/
initrd /initrd-2.6.10.img
Anyway, boot time was at best, marginally better. Which I suppose is
information, though I don't know what to make of it. :(
I don't have any unusual hardware that I'm aware of, but I've included
the output from lspci -v, posted below.
Thanks.
