Have you checked the mixer settings (alsamixer, kmix, etc.)? Upon
installing FC3 on my system, the master channel (as well as some other
channels that I cannot remember) were either muted or turned all the
way down to their minimums. Probably worth a try. If you google
sound problems on FC3, you'll get more links than you'll probably
want, and most of them point you to going in and un-muting a channel
or two via a mixer prog.
