Video-Streaming-Server

Is there any application which can be used for a LAN based On-Demand
Streaming server? Something like MythTV / VideoLanClient or (what's the
other one called)

I only want to look at the backend. There will be some set-top boxes but
I've heard that it will use UPNP. Not sure how that will bode with
Linux.

Anyone has any stories to share??
