Display problem HP zt1180

also new to Linux & FC3...

I have FC3 installed on a HP zt1180 lap top

When I boot up , the display fills about 3/4 of the screen biased to 
the right. It is also split, and duplicated on the lower quarter of the 
screen. The mouse pointers move in unison on both screens. I can see 
about 2/3rds of the desktop in the upper part and 1/3 in the lower 
part. This was happening in the boot splash screens as well.

I was able to fiddle with the display settings, and now the boot splash 
screens and login screen appear OK, but once I log in I'm back to the 
schizo split screen.

Is there any hope for this laptop, or do I ebay it and buy another?

Display settings:

Resolution: 1400 x 1050 24 bit
Hardware: Monitor type LCD Panel 1400 x 1050
Video Card: S3 Savage4 (any of the Savage 4s seem to work best)
