mouse stopped working

i have had a usb mouse in my notebook all the time.  I took it out and
went to my brothers, plugged it in, adn started to boot up  X loads,
and the mouse doesn't respond.  i log into gnome, mouse still doesn't
work,  log out and log into kde, same thing.   ant ideas??
