Cue to Su -

Another option is to use sudo. Around here, we compile it using

  --with-secure-path=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin

which is usually exactly the right thing with no surprises. 

I suggested RH do this, but it was closed as notabug.
