no sound in FC3

This seems to be a common problem for FC3 users but none of the fixes
posted on the web worked for me.
I have recently upgraded my OS from FC1 to FC3 and I do not have any
sound. In FC1 there was no such problem. Even now sound works in
Knoppix.
