Wrong. Prerogative means you have a choice. You don't have a choice.
If you want to run the new kernel, reboot and load it.

The question from the original poster is whether installing a new
kernel with yum automatically starts the kernel, or if a reboot is
required.

The answer to the question is yes, a reboot is required.
