Bizarre weirdness with del key and GNOME Terminal

But only at the command line -- Delete behaves as expected in text

So is mine.

I've tried that and it doesn't make any difference.
Anyway I have now determined that this isn't only happening in GNOME
Terminal as I at first thought, but also in xterm, konsole, and the
console. So there is some setting somewhere that is doing this, but I
just don't know where to find it.
