Installing mysql-4.1.9-1 in FC3

You're right, it's a bad idea. *Never* use rpm --force unless you know 
*exactly* what you're doing. There's almost always a better way.

You could try that but you may find that those packages in turn have 
further dependencies etc., and there's always the risk that something in 
the development tree may be broken.
