you needn't have lost any data or work whatsoever. Even after installing
FC2 without the CHS workaround altering the disk geometry back so that
Windows XP will boot is very simple.

I think that's unfair. The bug was a pain, but if you were informed
about as the OP is then working around it is beyond trivial. Once
installed FC2 is a fine OS.
