Make sure your NIC doesn't have a Broadcomm chipset! They don't comply.
I know--I stuck a Knoppix disk into a 2002 Dell and it couldn't find the
Internet.
But other than that--Linux support for existing hardware gets better all
the time. Hey--you don't know until you try.
