If you add a line:

alias scsi_hostadapter aha1542

to your /etc/modprobe.conf then any subsequent rebuild of your initrd
(such as would happen when you install a new kernel, or run mkinitrd
manually) would include the aha1542 module and the modprobe command to
load it automatically at an early stage of the boot process, and you
wouldn't need to manually do the modprobe again.
