stock vs. compiled kernels and ethernet failure

After compiling a stock kernel and booting into the kernel, I get an IP 
address and can access my router. I cannot contact a website or ping a 
computer by its known IP address.
Attached is the diff between a working kernel compared to the default 
settings of a stock kernel.
