You want to troubleshoot with
mysql -u root -p password
mysql -u root -p password -h 127.0.0.1
mysql -u root -p password -h localhost
rather than with DBI.
If that fails, start the mysql daemon with the --skip-grant-tables option
and browse the tables in the mysql database for clues.
