Sure, but how many releases containing how many incompatible libraries
have there been so far for Ubuntu?  It's easy the first time around.
Debian-based systems are probably a bit better in general than RH/fedora
about mixing repositories but they aren't perfect either.  At some
point you just have to make a choice about backwards compatibility
or you can't move forward.
