Remote Assistance

The way I do it, which may cost a small amount of money to make it work 
easier

buy 2 VPN endpoints and setup a ipsec tunnel to your dad's network (this 
may provide you with many other benifits, sharing photos, voip, etc)
Then on linux  use   rdesktop

Works great for me
