It is possible, using sasldb instead of saslauthd, or by using saslauthd
with mech ldap or pam and a specific pam module like pam_ldap or
pam_mysql.

And you then start with such a complex setup? This isn't advised as it
is hard to understand all the components and their interactions.
The "easiest" approach to run Cyrus-IMAPd with non system accounts and
virtual hosting is to use a sasldb2 auth backend.
