Are you using DVI or VGA? If DVI, does switching to VGA fix anything?
I have had some similar funky issues with a 2001 FP on my home machine,
however that machine is running FreeBSD 5.4. I believe that at least
some of the problems reported may be due to a problem with the monitor
itself... I'll see if I can dig up the information I found when I was
looking into it.
