This last link appeared to contain the fix, thanks Mike. I got the db
repaired, and then had yum update rpm and rpm-lib, then yum but no
update there.

Then I fired a 'yum update' (in a "linux single" boot) off to go do
the rest of it, 32 additional packages were downloaded, and 585
transactions were attempted. Lots of checksum failures, one of them
in the all important kde3/launcher_panelapplet.so, and nearly 10 of
them in the various openoffice-org-langpack files, mostly in the help
tree, one in kmix/window.png, one in kstars/jupiter.L2.Vsop and in
kbruch/convert.png.

I reran yum and it picked up only one of the openoffice-langpacks it
had failed on before.

I changed /etc/inittab to boot to level 3 and exited the single shell
expecting a reboot, but it went ahead and tried to finish the bootup
from there. The runlevel 3 seemed to be fighting with something as
it kept taking my login screen away in favor of an attempt to run x,
but failed and looped back, eventually letting me login. But then, I
mounted /dev/hdb1 as /mnt/bdi-boot intending to recover my emc
install on /dev/hdb, and discovered that this partition, while a
slightly different size according to a df report, was otherwise
identical to /dev/hda1 currently mounted as /boot as far as its
contents were concerned.

So my bdi install of emc on /dev/hdb is apparently toast. Thanks FC4,
I had some drivers for that triple 82C55 card under developement
there too. :-( So thats another wheel I may have to re-invent.

So I typed 'reboot'.

Now its stuck here:

OK, booting the kernel (this would be the updated one yum just
installed I think)
crc error
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on
unknown-block(0,0)

So WTF is wrong now?
