The worst that will happen if you say
yum update rpm yum
as a separate first step is that you waste some time while it
tells you that you already have the latest versions.

Sometimes I've been able to 'apt-get update; apt-get upgrade' to
fix a yum-induced problem and sometimes I've had to do the
opposite.
