clam works fine for scanning files and directories on workstations. It 
can scan all subdirectories with the -r flag.

Here is a liveCD that has both f-prot and clam AV on them.

You can:
1. Boot from CD
2. Mount partitions
3. Scan with AV

The idea is to make sure that the viruses do not interfere with your scan.


Panda makes a freeware version of their scanner (not free as in freedom, 
but as in no cost).
