No converted at all. I'm just plugging the Apple Display in the back  
of the linux box. It doesn't work.

Colin,
I don't know what semi-sane modelines are or how to generate them.  
Could you elaborate a little bit more on this and if this would fix  
the problem please show me how to do it?
