Have you tried burning DL at 4 instead of 16? I'm not a DVD guru, but 
the spec for my NEC DL drive says it burns DL at 4X vs 16X for SL. If I 
read it correctly, your Sony has the same spec.

You might also try growisofs instead of cdrecord like this :

growisofs -dvd-compat -speed=4 -Z /dev/hdc=dvd.iso
