Welcome to modern (or even not-so-modern) legal systems.

I recall having a conversation with a (at the time newly-made)
german friend telling me about his brother's divorce in
Germany. He said that the lawyers got involved, and split
up their holdings between them, leaving the divorced ex-
couple with little left. I explained to him that it is the
same in the USA, and, I expect, throughout western culture.

For all I know, it's the same in other cultures.

Here in the USA, there is even a genre of joke called the
"lawyer joke". They are posed as question and answer. Like

Q: How does one get a lawyer out of a tree?
A: Cut the rope.

But we stray from Fedora matters.
