Get SATA serial number

Hallo,
i'm trying to read the serial mumber of an SATA Disk.
"hdparm -i /dev/sda" says:
/dev/sda:
HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

Is there another way to get the serial number?
