Adding new disks, include in volume group

I've tried to carry out the steps above bit came unstuck at the lvextend
stage. Anyone see what I'm doing wrong? Below is the session I was
running.

[root at larry1 ~]# lvextend -L +40G /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00
/dev/hdb
Volume group mapper doesn't exist
