low sound volume

Anyone else having this problem? 

Sound was working fine in FC3.  Did a fresh install of FC4, sound works 
but can hardly hear it.  Have tried Rythmbox, Amarok and the CD player 
with the same results.

I've made sure the inputs are un-muted, turned up all the volume 
controls, tried all the inputs/outputs on the sound card with no luck.
