FC4: choppy sound - seems to be ESD? [SOLVED]

Of course, 8 bit gives me very poor sound (not distorted or anything,
just lofi).

I found the problem also goes away if I crank the sample rate up high
enough. I've set it to 88200 and it seems ok.
