I am not clear whether you run the "gnome-network-preferences" command
already to set the proxy. If all fails you may use following environment
setting:

/etc/profile.d/proxy.sh
export http_proxy=http://host.com:port/
export ftp_proxy=http://host.com:port/
export no_proxy=.domain.com
export HTTP_PROXY=http://host.com:port/
export FTP_PROXY=http://host.com:port/

/etc/profile.d/proxy.sh is a script file (chmod +x).
