| The exact same thing happened to me today on my Dell Latitude D800.
| Yesterday everything was fine, but today gnome-volume-control wouldn't
| start, and I couldn't change the volume level with the volume control
| applet in the panel.
|
| I ran gnome-volume-control as root, which worked. I then tried running
| it as a normal user, and viola, it was working again. But, the volume
| control applet was still busted. I removed the applet from the panel,
| added it again, and it was back to normal.
|
| I haven't looked into it any deeper than that, so you might want to give
| what I did above a try.
|
| I installed the update for SElinux yesterday. I wonder if that update
| had something to do with the problem.

The installation of the new policy has a lot to do with it. Firstly, check the
policy (/etc/selinux/targeted/policy) and booleans (/etc/selinux/targeted) to
make sure that selinux uses the new version of the files which is still
incorrectly marked with the .rpmnew extension.

Next, to ensure that gstreamer sees your audio/video hardware and software
(codecs, etc) you'll have to execute the command "gst-register" to make sure
that everything is _registered_ and you should get volume control back. Note: I
had to run a gstreamer app (rhythmbox) before the applet on the panel would
operate properly again.
