FC4 ignores /etc/hosts?

As root, you can use strace to figure out whether or not hosts is being 
opened:

strace -e connect,open ping gw -c 2 >/dev/null

If hosts is being opened, then you should check the file for problems 
that might prevent it from being parsed.
