new memory not recognized

Erm -- which laptop? We need to know more about it.

For example, if it's based on an Intel 810 or 815 chipset, then these
chipsets don't support more than 512 MB of memory (e.g.
http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets/embedded/273428.htm )
