I made the wrong suggestion.

strace -o /tmp/scan.txt -E SANE_DEBUG_MUSTEK_PP=1 scanimage -L

should do it properly by writing the strace output to the scan.txt file
in /tmp and using the environment variable you want to use. See "man
strace" for explanations. The strace output file my become quite long.
Check for "OPEN" and "FAILED" expressions and other things which
indicates a problem.
