Turning off items that load on boot

The "gui" is system-config-services
You can do this on the command line with 'ntsysv' (if you have a terminal
that supports color and character graphics, or use 'chkconfig' if you want
a plain vanilla tool.

man each command for the details; there's a lot to go through.
